I chose to examine this comparison between the value of the British pound chart created by Bloomberg and the cliffs of Beachy Head, which are known for its high suicide rates. I think the initial chart is boring and too dark, but it does a good job of highlighting the dramatic drop the value of the pound takes on with the high-contrasting white line. What brings that dark chart alive is when it is juxtaposes with something symbolic of depression and the UK in one, which happens to be the Beachy Head cliffs. The meaning of the pound plummeting in value ruined the British economy and represented a dark time in the country. Seeing that chart and comparing it to something not only visually similar in shape, but also similar in mood/tone is what makes this piece brilliant and interesting.
